April 3 is DIY Day – Tips on What You Should and Should NOT Do!

DIY Day Tips

The past year has encouraged many of us to take on various DIY projects within our homes and living spaces because – why not? We were advised to stay put as much as possible and for many homeowners, the opportunity to make various improvements, fixes and changes to living areas was too easy to pass up. Not only was it a way to pass the time, but also helped mark projects off lists and probably added some aesthetic and maybe even financial value to living spaces. As April 3 is DIY Day – Tips on What You Should and Should NOT Do!

Celebrated the first Saturday in April every year, DIY Day was created in 2016 by the Craft Box Girls, a lifestyle destination to get inspired and discover DIY projects for anyone of any age. If you’re feeling crafty – or especially if you have kids who are – take advantage of the various projects you can ‘do yourself’ in honor of this day.

Do you have rooms in your home that could use a fresh coat of paint? You can certainly save some money if you take that task on.

Likewise, if you are handy and patient, refurbishing furniture, rearranging and redecorating rooms and reorganizing closets, cabinets and other spaces are all great ‘DIY tasks’ that not only save you money, but can help you feel accomplished too!

However, also keep in mind that there are a number of tasks and projects that are probably best left in the hands of professionals. Below are a few examples:

Painting the Exterior of Your Home

This is a tricky task that is probably best left in the hands of professionals. It is worth the cost to ensure that the right materials, tools, ladders and more are utilized to ensure the painting job is done to your liking. It’s best to work with a company or individual who is licensed and insured.

Electrical Work

Tasks like installing light fixtures, ceiling fans or other work that requires more in-depth knowledge of electrical units are best left to the professionals. While these can be costly, the knowledge and expertise that come with working with electrical systems is worth it. Additionally, allowing a trained professional to handle the job is a safer bet.

Gutter Cleaning

Many take this task on themselves, but there’s a lot to be said for having a professional service handle this. Clogged gutters can lead to a host of problems, including pools of water forming around a home as well as water leakage in a basement. A primary concern of water damage is mold, which will most certainly require professional intervention to get rid of it and prevent it from coming back.

Plumbing

There are certainly some plumbing tasks that are relatively easy and able to handled by both the handy and not so handy. But these tasks can also turn disastrous very quickly if not handled by professionals, which ends up costing more time and money.

Roofing

Similar to the gutter cleaning, fixes to rooves are best left to professionals. Roofing issues from weather like rain, snow and wind can result in a lot of damage and can be dangerous if not handled and fixed properly. Investing in a team of professionals is worth it.

If you leave these kinds of projects to the professionals, you’ll have more time to dedicate your skills, creativity and efforts to other fixes and changes you can do on your own.
