Alongside Minoxidil, Finasteride is one of two active medications that exist in Sons’ hair loss treatment plans. Finasteride works by reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels in the scalp, which is the naturally-occurring hormone that is predominantly responsible for male pattern hair loss. As a result, Finasteride is widely used to treat hair loss in men, which we explain in detail below.

Introducing Finasteride
Finasteride first appeared in the early 1990s to treat men with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It is still used in a 5mg dose to treat the common condition, which results in an enlarged prostate and trouble urinating. Following trials later in the nineties, 1mg of Finasteride was medically approved to treat hair loss in 1998 by the FDA.
Is Finasteride effective?
In 90% of men who take it, Finasteride has proven effective as a hair loss treatment. Some research has found that after six months of treatment, hair loss typically improves by around 30%. Finasteride is most effective when used alongside Minoxidil, as the two medications work hand in hand to tackle male pattern hair loss. Clinical studies further highlight that Finasteride can lower DHT levels by up to 60%.
How does it work?
Finasteride’s role is to limit the production of DHT, which is a male hormone that leads to the miniaturisation of the hair follicles on your scalp. DHT binds to the hair follicles on your head, which causes them to shrink and eventually die off. When taken consistently, Finasteride counteracts this process and prevents DHT’s accumulation around your hair follicles.
When will you start seeing results?
Most men start seeing some results within three months of taking Finasteride consistently. However, it will take between 6-12 months until Finasteride truly kicks in and starts delivering impressive results. You can mark your progress with Finasteride by taking a picture of your hair once every month. This allows you to compare and contrast your hair quality and quantity and will help you monitor your results.
What about side effects?
Less than 5% of people who take Finasteride experience side effects, meaning they are rare. However, the most common side effects are a reduced quality of sperm and a reduction of libido. Some men also see their mood affected, which is particularly the case when stopping Finasteride. It’s really important to fully understand the side effects associated with Finasteride, and you should study the Patient Information Leaflet before taking the medication. If you experience side effects when taking Finasteride, you should contact your GP as soon as possible.
How to take Finasteride
The most effective way of taking Finasteride is in tablet form once a day. You should try and take it at regular intervals, and it’s helpful to take it as part of your daily routine, perhaps immediately after brushing your teeth in the morning.
